In this session, we are stoked to have Joe Simon from Joe Simon Wedding Films & The Delivery Men on the show. Joe Simon is a cinematographer who runs two businesses quite successfully. Co-founding Mutiny Bikes, a BMX bike company, as well as Joe Simon Films in 1999 producing gorgeously cinematic wedding films & more recently The Delivery Men where Joe produces amazing work for commercial clients. Based in Austin, TX, but working all over the world, his goal was to create wedding films that his clients actually want (and love!) to watch. Joe has done independent films, as well as other film ventures, and decided to approach weddings with the same creativity, passion, and expertise. But he never expected the journey his camera would take him on. His company is currently recognized as one of the top wedding studios in the world! He is a multi-Bronze & multi-Silver Telly Award winner as well as occupying a coveted spot in EventDV’s Top 25 Filmmakers multiple times. Joe now has the honor of teaching other filmmakers at conferences and workshops around the world. Back in early 2010, I (Stephen) was poking around the internet and stumbled upon the trailer for a gorgeously shot short film, called City of Lakes. Joe was the 2nd Unit Director for the film, and this was when I was first introduced to his work. See the trailer below to get a small taste of Joe’s work. You can also check out his site & Vimeo channel below to see more!
We are really excited to have Joe share about his work and journey. In this session you’ll find out about:
- How to iterate your work to create your style
- Why you should learn about running a business while you are learning your craft
- Why you should never compete on price
- What to do when you catch on fire when shooting a wedding
- How Joe priced his work before he got serious, and what he did once he realized he wasn’t making squat
